Our History With Public School
Like many families who decide to homeschool, the Spencer family had originally started off their children in the public school system before making the decision to educate them at home. After a few years of attending public school, however, Pastor Scott and his wife Samantha noticed a problem with the quality of the education that was being taught to their children; when simple things (like spelling and handwriting skills) were completely overlooked, learning to write in cursive was no longer a requirement, and their children were not held accountable to the same standards of education that were required of Pastor Scott and Samantha when they were in school (at the same grade levels that their children were in now).
The most notable evidence of this had to do with their son, Colin - who was getting ready to pass from his 1st grade year into 2nd grade. Colin could not meet any of the academic requirements of his grade level - could neither read, nor write, nor spell (anything), and was severely behind his classmates in all levels of achievement. Several meetings were held with Colin's teachers to help "correct" the problems with his learning (to no avail), and only helped to solidify in the minds of the Spencers' of the public school's inability to teach properly, inability to control students (or discipline them when required), and an overall lack of concern for how their son was actually performing. When the Spencers' learned of the public school's intent to "pass" Colin into the next grade level anyway, they requested that he be held behind to repeat his 1st grade year. To their surprise, the school refused - stating that they practiced "No Child Left Behind" - which prevented Colin from being held back; so he did not get "left behind" by his classmates (apparently being "left behind" in education was not a problem).

Allowing their son to suffer due to the public school's inability to teach properly (or unwillingness to do what was in his best interests) was not something Pastor Scott and Samantha were willing to allow - and they immediately began looking into what it took to homeschool their child. Shortly afterward, they pulled Colin out of public school; and the next year they repeated his 1st grade year - this time providing the structure and discipline that he needed. It worked wonderfully - and by the end of his 1st grade school year (being homeschooled), Colin was fully able to read, write, and spell, and had been able to completely catch up to where he "should be" (academically) for a child who is getting ready to pass from 1st into 2nd grade.
Why Should I consider Homeschooling my children?
There are many reasons to consider homeschooling. Once something that was only thought being done by what the secular world called "religious fanatics" - homeschooling has become ever, and ever, more popular in recent years; and especially with the new changes that have been made when the schools re-opened after having being "locked down" due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Some of the common reasons for you to consider homeschooling are listed below:

Quality Education - In a study conducted in 2011 in Canada, researchers compared 74 children, ages 5-10 years old, living in Novia Scotia and New Brunswick - 37 of which attended public school, and 37 of which were homeschooled (or home-educated). The study revealed that the children who were in public school (on average) tested at, or slightly above, "par" level - while the children who were homeschooled (on average) tested well above "par". It also found that the focused instruction, smaller learning environment, and added academic time of homeschooled children led to their grades being higher (on average) than those who attended public school. Other studies have also found that students who are homeschooled typically perform better on standardized tests then public school students.

Accelerated Education - Unlike children who attend public school (who are often limited in their pace of learning by a fixed system of education), children that are homeschooled have the ability to learn at their own pace. This means that it is possible to graduate one, maybe two, or perhaps even several years earlier from high school than a student who attends public school. (Keep in mind, that as exciting as graduating from high school at 16 years old (or younger) may sound, finishing high school early also requires dedication and hard work - from both students and educators (or parents). But the option is there to pursue if early graduation is desired.)

Advanced Education - One of the benefits of homeschooling is the ability to teach other subjects and classes that are outside of a "standard" school curriculum - especially if a student excels at certain subjects more than others. For example, if the subject of "Math" comes very readily to your student, he or she can continue on to more advanced mathematics courses, while still remaining at the "typical" grade level in other courses. This means that they could (conceivably) be taking classes such as Trigonometry, Pre-calculus, or Calculus while in their early High School (or perhaps even Middle School) years - which also enables them to take additional courses of "higher" education, or college level classes, while still in high school.
We have heard and read testimonials of families who have been able to teach their homeschooled students several additional languages, advanced artistic and musical skills (such as being able to play multiple musical instruments, drawing and painting skills, dance lessons, etc.), and even "dual-enrolling" in college and high school at the same time - so that they are able to graduate from college with their Associates Degree at the same time as graduating from high school. The possibilities are endless - and are only limited by the amount of time and hard work you and your student are willing to put into their education.

Faith Based Learning - Statistics say that 70% of children who were raised in a Christian home, but attended public school, lose their faith by the end of their first year of college if they attend a secular university. Those statistics are both saddening and alarming - but really, parents, what do we expect? When every educational institution our children are enrolled in, or involved with, is teaching them doctrines that contradict the Word of God on almost a daily basis?
Today, in the Public school system, students are taught that "Evolution" is an established fact (and Creation is a myth) as early as the 1st grade year; and in today's public school curriculum, traditional family values have been abandoned all together in favor of the "agenda" of alternative sexual lifestyle groups and the transgender/unisex movement. Students who "stand up for their faith" are ostracized by their peers (and sometimes even their teachers) - and they are told that the "traditional values" and "teachings about God" that you (as their parents) have raised them with are "wrong" (while the things they are teaching them in the public school are "right"). With such confusion, it is no wonder so many of them lose their faith by the time they get to college; they have been bombarded by teachings that are contrary to the Word of God at almost every turn.
With homeschooling, you can instill in your children the faith in God and family values that YOU want them to have - not the anti-Christian teachings that the public school system wants to indoctrinate them with. Such a "firm foundation" will give your children the "grounding" they need to be able to keep their faith once they are out in the "world" and on their own; and allow them to be able to stand for their faith against teachings and philosophies that contradict the Word of God when they come their way. (Matthew 7:24-27)

America's Push Towards Socialism and Communism - It doesn't take a person too long of a time watching news media to hear about how our country has began the shift towards a more Socialistic governmental society. This "drive" away from our current (Capitalistic based) form of government, and towards a Socialist (and eventually a Communist) form of government, is not something that Christians should take lightly. Statistics say that as many as 70% of "Millennials" believe that a Socialist form of government would be preferable over a Capitalist one - and only about 1 in 10 Millennials today have (what is known as) a "Biblical World View". There are high school teachers and college professors, all over our country today, filling our children's heads full of socialist and communist ideology - and school curriculums like "Common Core" are simply getting us accustomed to the new societal shift (so when it comes into full force, we don't put up "too much" of a fuss). One of the Spencer's own children (who attended public school) had a high school teacher tell their class that "true Communism" was the "ideal form of government".
For many families, the Covid-19 lock-down (by forcing school children to have to learn from home) opened many parents' eyes to what the public school was actually teaching their children. We have heard the testimonies (and seen stories on social media) from parents and families all over the country - who overheard their children's teachers indoctrinating their students with Pro-Socialistic and Communistic Agenda; as well as re-writing history to make these forms of government seam more ideal. One story in particular, was about a high school teacher who taught his class that what Adolph Hitler did to the Jewish people in Germany during the Holocaust of WWII "wasn't truly wrong" - he just did "what seemed right to him in his own eyes".
With stories like these, a parent must wonder, "what in the world can be done to help fix this problem?" Well, the answer to that question does not lie with the public school system - or trying to fix the public school system (because it is not going to get better, but only worse). The answer lies with taking charge of what your children learn about in school - By making the decision to school them at home.

Mandatory Vaccination Requirements for Public and Private School Students - There is a growing trend in the United States (and already established in some other countries outside of America) to require vaccinations in order for Children to be able to attend public school. Although vaccinations have been "required" by public schools in order for children to be able to attend for years, there were always exemptions that could be obtained - typically for medical, religious, and philosophical reasons. However, several states in America have recently eliminated exemptions for vaccinations for any reason other than medical - and some states no longer even allow those.
Such laws make it so parents, who are opposed to getting vaccinations for their children (for whatever reason), are put in a position where they need to make a choice: Either compromise their religious or philosophical stand on vaccinations (and in the case of medical, put their children's health at risk) in order for their child to be able to attend school - or pull their children out of school, and educate them at home. For those parents who believe strongly in their convictions against vaccinating their children (and live in countries, states, provinces, or territories where vaccinations are mandatory), they are left with only one choice: Homeschool. We at the Sword & Trowel Revival Fellowship feel your pain and understand what you are going through. That is why one of the ministries of our church is the Sword & Trowel Christian Homeschool Co-op. We can help you get started on the right path when it comes to homeschooling your child; as well as offer some encouragement and support to help you on this journey.

What is a Homeschool "Co-Op"?
A Homeschool Co-op (or "Cooperative") is a group of families who meet or come together and work cooperatively to achieve common goals. Typically, Homeschool Co-ops are organized around academics, social time, the arts, activities, crafts, service work, or projects - or some combination of any (or all) of these.
The Sword & Trowel Christian Homeschool Co-op
The "Sword & Trowel Christian Academy" is the name affectionately given to the home-school run by the Spencer family in their home. Three of the Spencer's children currently attend (as the youngest is too young, and the oldest five are grown and on their own). Diligent care and effort are taken to make sure that the curriculum that is taught meets local and state educational requirements for each respective grade level, and all necessary testing and reports are done in accordance with those agencies.
For parents and guardians wishing to invest in their children's future by making the decision to homeschool, we want you to know that you are among friends here at our church. One of our ministries here is the "Sword & Trowel Christian Homeschool Co-op" - where we work together with our church member's families to help them be able to achieve their educational goals with regards to homeschooling their children. Whether it comes to helping parents (or educators) choose a school curriculum that works best for them and their children, to helping them develop a "classroom" structural environment that promotes learning, to giving guidance on how to incorporate extra-curricular activities (such as music lessons, the arts, physical education, etc.) into the home schooling arena, or even to just offer a "shoulder to cry on" with regards to the daily struggles that all parents and educators face when teaching their children at home - we are here to help you. Our main goal is to see you succeed.
Let's be honest: homeschooling (like parenting) can sometimes be hard. The decision to homeschool is not for everybody - and some parents are not in a position to be able to teach their children at home - or simply unable to be able to homeschool due to schedule conflicts or job requirements. Although private school is definitely an option that we would recommend you explore in these situations, quite often parents are unable to afford the cost that private schooling may bring - leaving public school as their only alternative. We understand this, and we feel for you. Homeschooling is sometimes not an option for us in the fast paced world we live. But for those parents and families who do make the decision to homeschool - we want you to know that you are making one of the best decisions that you will ever make regarding the rearing of your child; and although life for you and your family may change, and scarifies may have to be made (on the part of both parents and children), you are making an investment in your children's education and future that is irreplaceable - and when they are out of the house and on their own, you will realize that every sacrifice you made was more than worth it, and that there was (quite possibly) no greater "gift" you could have given them (other than leading them to the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, Himself) than making the decision to educate them at home.
A Personal note from Samantha Spencer
"Homeschooling our children was the best educational decision we have ever made for them. This was initially brought on by a very bad experience with the public school system - after learning that they were not taking the proper time (or effort) in teaching one of our children (who was in first grade at the time); But secondly (and perhaps more importantly), was the blatant disregard for our religious beliefs - which were undermined by public school teachers telling our children the things we had taught them (about God, the Bible, Creation, etc.) were "not correct". Finally, we discovered (from some of our older children) that the public school was indoctrinating our children to believe that a government based on socialism and communism (not capitalism) was the only true and right way to live.
Honestly, I could go on and on with complaints about the rewriting of our history, the complete moral break down of our educational system, the brainwashing of our children, etc. - but we simply do not have enough space on this web page to be able to list them all (lol)! Please don't get me wrong - there are many good teachers in "the system", but unfortunately we have allowed many "bad apples" into our schools (and in positions of authority governing our schools), who's "sole mission" (it seems) is to "destroy" the precepts our country was founded upon, and eliminate our country's Christian heritage. This cannot be allowed to happen! And that is the reason why parents should strongly consider taking an active roll in the educating of their children - and not leaving it up to the public school system."
